SYMPOSIUM 2012 PANELISTS
We invited experts and local community leaders in the fields of medical technology, global health, and community health to attend our symposium and give their feedback and advice to our students as they presented their innovations. We are grateful for their contribution to this elective and we would like to thank them by recognizing them on this page.
Frank Ahmann
Mr. Ahmann is the President and COO of LoneStar Health, a life sciences start up that originated from UTSW technology. He did his Bachelor’s at UT Austin and earned his MBA at Columbia University.
Craig Hobar
Dr. Hobar is a board-certified plastic surgeon and one of the founders at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute. He is also the founder of the LEAP Foundation, which organizes specialized medical and surgical services to several developing countries, including Haiti, since 1991.
Dr. Nathan Huntoon
Dr. Huntoon is a professor of engineering at SMU. He is also the director of the SMU Innovation Gymnasium and has assisted similar student-led projects, some of which were captured in his talk at TEDxSMU.
Patti Pagels
Ms. Pagels received her degree and certificate as a Physicina Assistant in 1996 from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and earned a BA degree in Cultural Anthropology in 1986 from UT El Paso. Her career as a PA has been entirely in academia, teaching in a medical school, a PA program and now a Family Medicine residency. Her teaching and research interests include: health literacy, cultural competence and caring for underserved populations. She serves as Medical Director for Union Gopsel Mission which serves homeless men, women and children and is the co-Medical Director at North Dallas Shared Ministries a community clinic caring for primarily Latino families.
Kimberly and Dumas Simeus
Kimberly and Dumas are the founder and president of Sove Lavi, a Dallas-area non-profit organization that has been working to develop better medical care, clean water access, and education in the community of Pont Sonde, Haiti.
Hubert Zajicek
Dr. Zajicek is the Managing Director of the North Texas Enterprise Center. He earned his MD at the University of Vienna and MBA at SMU Cox Business school. He is was also a post-doctoral researcher at UTSW’s Nephrology Department.
