Medical Technology Track
The Medical Device track of the Innovating Healthcare Solutions elective will
focus on identifying unmet clinical needs and
understanding the process of developing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic
medical technology as solutions to address these needs.
We will begin the “breakout sessions” of this track with a brief overview of the medical technology industry and the different aspects of med device innovation. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the UT Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery and potentially other Parkland wards as part of the needs finding process. Throughout the course, guest speakers on community healthcare and course facilitators will provide insight into effectively brainstorming, assessing, evaluating, and implementing the proposed solutions that students design. Our goal is to come up with practical and cost-effective solutions to the clinical needs identified/presented and learn the process to eventually realize these ideas as viable solutions over the long term.
We will conclude the course at the end of the year with submission of the proposed project/solution to members of a “Med Tech panel” which will comprise of leaders of various departments like the UT Southwestern Biocenter, Bioengineering, and other physician-entrepreneurs but also to a campus-wide symposium where students can showcase and educate others in the community about their various projects.
